One of the most visibly celebrated days on the UAE calendar, and a genuinely good time to be in the capital if your dates line up.
UAE National Day, on 2 December, marks the anniversary of the 1971 union of the emirates into a single federation under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. It's a genuinely significant date nationally, not just a public holiday — flags, lights and national colours (red, white, black and green) appear across the city in the days beforehand.
Expect decorated buildings, car convoys with flags and National Day-branded decals, public celebrations along the Corniche and on Yas Island, and fireworks displays after dark. Many hotels and malls run their own themed events and decorations through the surrounding week, extending the atmosphere beyond the day itself.
As a public holiday, some businesses adjust their hours, and popular public spaces like the Corniche get considerably busier in the evening than usual — arrive early if you want a good spot for fireworks viewing.
