Al Wathba Wetland Reserve protects a man-made lake that has become an important stopover for migratory birds, most famously flocks of greater flamingos visible from designated hides — a genuine wildlife-watching experience within reach of the city, rare for this part of the Gulf.
Nearby, the Al Wathba fossil dunes are a striking geological feature — ancient dune formations that have hardened into rock over time, eroded into dramatic ridges and arches. It's an easy, worthwhile stop to combine with the wetland reserve on the same trip out of the city.
