A striking, dome-covered museum on Saadiyat Island that tells a universal story of art and civilisation, not just a regional one.
Designed by architect Jean Nouvel, the museum's signature feature is a vast perforated dome that lets filtered light fall through in shifting patterns across the plaza below, an effect often described as a “rain of light.” The museum sits partly over water, with the dome visible from across Saadiyat's waterfront.
Rather than organising by geography or era in the usual way, the Louvre Abu Dhabi arranges its permanent galleries chronologically and thematically, placing objects from different civilisations side by side to draw out shared human stories — a genuinely different curatorial approach from most encyclopaedic museums.
Give yourself at least two to three hours for a proper visit, more if temporary exhibitions are running. Late afternoon is a good time to catch the light effect through the dome at its most dramatic, and the museum's waterside cafe is a pleasant stop either side of your visit.
