Close enough for a genuinely good day trip, Dubai adds a very different city experience onto an Abu Dhabi-based stay.
The drive between the two city centres takes roughly 60–90 minutes depending on traffic and exact starting point, on a well-maintained motorway. Options include self-driving a rental car, taking an intercity bus, booking a private transfer, or joining an organised day tour that bundles transport with a guided itinerary.
With one day, most visitors focus on two or three headline stops rather than trying to cover all of Dubai: typically Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall, a walk or abra ride around Dubai Creek and the old souks, and one iconic photo stop such as Burj Al Arab from the public beach or Palm Jumeirah's Atlantis. Trying to add more than this in a single day usually means rushing everything.
Self-driving gives you control over timing but means navigating unfamiliar toll gates and Dubai's traffic patterns; an organised tour removes that hassle and often includes skip-the-line access to headline sights, at the cost of a fixed schedule.
